rendering a scanline project in MENTAL RAY???... possible?
on Mar 2, 2013 at 7:17:35 pm

Hi every one.

I have a 36 sec big scene animation made initially for scanline render. The scanline takes too long (15 min per frame), I tried changing to mental ray and it is 4 times faster.

Changed all my shadow maps to mental ray shadow maps and changed the sky light to MR skylight. I am planning on tweaking the render settings of course, but even if its only 2 x as fast its great.

It renders really much faster but I am not using any mental ray materials nor lights. It is a cartoon style animation so I do not need photo realistic lights etc.

QUESTION: Will there be any disadvantage in my renders as far as quality is concerned? Or will certain things not render properly?

Regards,

Ali

Here's a good rundown on myths and facts about Mental Ray - there's quite a bit that discusses the scanline vs MR issue:

Thank you, very interesting.

I am still wondering if non mental ray materials can be rendered in mental ray with the same quality as scanline.

I have my exact scanline setup, standard ligts etc. all i did was just switch render to MR.

Reason is not to get a more realistic result, as it is a cartoon scene I just dont want it to get too realistic but I want at least a scanline quality. But MR renderer on my computer is like 4 times faster then scanline, thats the only reason, faster. I dont want to loose quality though.

Can not find much info on my question on the web.

Any info would be helpful.

rgrds,

Ali

Here's some more information, direct from Autodesk:
http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/mental_ray_white_paper_2012_en.pdf

You don't find much info out there because every project is different, every Mental Ray setup has dozens of possible settings, and there's really no clear answer to it all.

There's a great book on the topic, from Focal Press:

http://www.focalpress.com/books/details/9780240812373/

It's 54 dollars, but you can often find older editions of it on Ebay for way less. The book answers just about any question you can think of.
