I got a knight model for 3ds max I lost the link so I just re-uploaded the package here
http://www.mediafire.com/?g5pxdda5vd6yfx6
The problem is that when I put it in 3ds the model is all locked together so I cant animate the arms, legs, etc, and when I go to the grouping tab to ungroup it I am unable to ungroup it. Now I got a hint that I might be able to ungroup the parts under the manager layers tab but I dont see any options to ungroup it there!

It's possible that the knight model isn't setup for rigging at all. Take a look in poly mode and see whether the texture mapping is set by elements, in which case you may have to separate all of the elements into the pirces you need to animate them. Sometimes modelers build their models without an eye toward animating them.

You really need to do some tutorials on the basics - this is about as basic as it gets:

There's also a YouTube Max Channel that has hundreds of tutorials on all aspects of Max - I would suggest you work through them. Knowing the basics will get you the answers a lot quicker than asking about them here. Max is not one of those "jump in and do it" packages - I've been working with it over 10 years, and in my opinion, I'm just an intermediate user.
