rendering seperate layers

Can I create a render that seperates my elements that are on LAYERS with 1 single render?

For example,
Layer 1 contains a building
Layer 2 contains Particles
Layer 3 contains Animation objects
When rendered, the results would be...
3 sequence files seperated
Layer 1 rendered,
Layer 2 rendered, etc...

Basically very simular to " shading passes", specular, reflection, etc..

Now, I am aware of "RENDER PASSES" in maya but I think render passes have to be rendered for each layer. Which would mean If I had 3 layers, I would have to render 3 times.

This is NOT what I am looking for.
My render time on this project is 6 minutes a frame and I have 400 frames, so you do the math.

I am looking for 1 render that seperated the layers into 3 renders
(again, like shading passes)

So is there a way or am I pipe dreaming?

I haven't used this script, but it might do the job for you:
