Animating Camera On A Path

In 3DS Max. Animating a camera along a path.
I need to use a very long path. At various points along the path, I have to use Key Frames to speed up or slow down the camera. If I put in all of the Key frames and then have to make an adjustment to the path and it messes up all of the Key Frames, I'm going to go crazy.
Can I make short paths and have the camera switch from one to the other by finishing the path then breaking it into smaller paths?
Or, after I finish adjusting the path, can I convert the camera path into XYZ coordinates?
Or, once the path is complete, can I lock it so it can't be changed?
Or, am I going about this all wrong?
