I'm working on an environment art test with one of the requirements being "ALL WORK MUST BE IN .MAX " and "The test must be submitted in Max 2009 or older."

I'm working in 2012. I can't seem to save in any previous version other than 2011 and 2010. I even reinstalled 2011 which is the oldest version I own and still no luck.

There might be a simple answere to this but I can't seen to find it. How can I save to a .max file for version 2009 or older?

Thanks in advance.

The bad news is that Max is not backward compatible to any version -it's only forward compatible from earlier versions.

That said, you might be able to export your model (I don't think you're going to get lights or cameras or anything but the model) as a .obj or .3ds, and then open that in the earlier version. You might also try Collada or FBX exports. The changes from one Max version to the next are always so massive that it's impossible for them to maintain backwards compatibility. Good luck!
