envelope problem - deselecting affected vertices

Hi,

When I go into envelope mode on a skinned, boned character in 3ds max 2011, I select a bone, and 3ds max shows me wich vertices are affected.

What can I do if don't want that all of those vertices are affected? How can I deselect them?

Your help is really appreciated, thank you.

I have not done character rigging for a long while but as long as 201 has not changed to much it should just be a case of selecting the bone, turning on edit envelopes and then using the brush tool to control the weights.

With the brush tool I can only paint-select the vertices that I want to be affected, I cannot "deselect" the vertices that are basically affected by the bones.
