import a 3d max file into another 3dmax

Hi there,

I'm a newcomer to 3d studio max (1week in) and have encountered many problems along the way - however none so frustratingly simple and unresolved as this.

I have been given an existing scene created by a previous designer which needs a few changes made. I have created a new table in a new 3dmax file which is to go into the scene. How do I do it?

Tried Importing but it tells me wrong file type.
Tried replacing with the existing table but it crashes every time I get to the materials options.
Tried Merging to no avail.

I can import illustrator files.
I just cant put in another 3dmax file. Tried saving it as characters etc etc...

At my wits end and know it must be easy.
Any help appreciated.

Rach

You have to use the MERGE option in order to import object from a scene to another one.

If it doesn't work (it would be nice to understand why) you can try the Xref objects. Search them in the help.

Simplest way is to just drag the file from its Windows folder and drop into a 3DS viewport.

You can also export (choose FBX, 3DS or OBJ) and then import. ***Note you can not import .MAX files this way.

If neither of the above work then need more details on file types might help.
