Open 3ds max help and search for "Animation Concepts" and "Using Auto Key Mode".

Basically you will need to add some key frames where you want that your object stops-starts again.

When you add a path constraint to an object, Max will create automatically two key frames at the beginning and at the end of your animation. You can see them in the curve editor after selecting you animated object.
