3ds max - Rigging/Mesh Problems

I have just been getting into 3dmax and I am having some problems I hope you can help me with.
Here is my situation - I am trying to rig a character that I downloaded. It is one complete object.
Problems (in order of occurrence)
1. When selecting the mesh to decide where to place color, the mesh is selected on both sides making it very difficult to articulate where i want the colors. Is there a better way to do this?
2. When i finally got my character rigged the render shows that some of the colors are different than they appear in the viewbox. (Sometimes when I zoom in I will see the mesh change as well.)
3. The character did not come in T position so the armpits are very hard to determine where my colors are going.
