Having been a user of graphics tablets (always Wacom) for many years, I recently purchased a tablet from Monoprice for the princely sum of 35 bucks for a tablet and two pens (battery powered, not passive, like the Wacom).
It took me a while to install and configure it, finally downloading and adding the Wacom Bamboo drivers to get some of the advanced pen functions (which worked fine in Vista 64). I'm now using it with After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Max 2010 and am very pleased. It's no Wacom, but after I tweaked the brush settings a bit in Photoshop and the overall sensitivity settings in the Control Panel, I've very pleased with the tracking and sensitivity.
Apparently this Monoprice tablet is manufactured in Taiwan and sold under several brands (I believe DigiPro is one) - do a search on "cheap drawing tablets" and you'll find some good articles. Here's the link to Monoprice - they shipped fast and the price was very right:
