griping objects by a 3d model during animated playback

I have a 3d model as as part of an animation in 3d max. When I grip an object from a hammer made from a separate mesh the hold does not maintain during animation playback. The 3d model animates correctly but the hammer gets left floating in thin air. Is there away for the 3d model to grip the hammer permanently throughout the entire animation?
