I am new to 3ds Max and I need to get materials from the material library. I followed the steps beginning with opening my materials editor, selecting materials library and then selected to see the list. Nothing is in the list so I hit open but then I get a message telling me that the library is empty. According to my class lecture and slides I should have a complete list of materials to select from. What am I missing here? I need to have that list to complete my assignment, especially the material for the exterior of the project building. Can someone please advice me how to get these materials to show themselves.
My guess is that the paths in your preferences aren't set to include the materials library you want to use. Do you get an error message when you open Max? If so, you need to set the path to where your materials library is - try doing a search on *.mat, which is the file extension for material libraries. You may find them somewhere on your system. Often when you are given a Mat library with models, you will find it in the same folder where the models are - of course Max doesn't know to look there for libraries when it starts up. If you find it there, you can just set that folder to be one of the materials folders, but it's safer to move the libraries to where they're supposed to live.
If not, just go into the materials browser (M key), and hit the OPEN button - of course you need to know where to point your search to in here as well. The above paragraph should help you find them. I believe you can also click the mesh with the missing material and see where it should be. That may help your search. Good luck!
