FumeFX and Lighting/Rendering

Hello everyone. As you read this, please keep in mind that the name of my production company is below, but it's not anything official, so please don't steal it.
I have a question regarding the FumeFX plugin and rendering it out. My scene involves some smoke (FumeFX), a bunch of lights, some objects, and a camera move.
Now, I can render out with mental ray and it'll give me something like this:

Take a look at the smoke layer. It's visible, but a little faint.

This is how I want the smoke to look:

Ironically, I totally forget what my render settings were for the second render, and I haven't been able to replicate it. Do any of you guys know what I should do? And yes, I'd like to render the smoke layer and the other layers separately, if possible.
