conflict between opacity map and fog

I have a model with about 3000 trees that I make using by adding a diffuse map and corresponding opacity map to a face. This works fine, except when I try a fog or volume fog effect, in which case you start seeing the parts that should be completely transparant. Does anybody have an idea how to solve this?
