Shell modifier on a complicated poly... HELP!

First post.. on any site actually, but really stuck and would like a little help if possible.
Trying to shell a complicated poly, want to keep the outside at its current size so using inner shell at 15 (quite high, to give it the required thickness), but as this is a torso/shirt the poly when shelled has got polygons sticking out the surface etc etc....
... is there anyway round this? I'd like to shell to the required thickness internally without the polys going through themselves inside to out!

I guess there is a simplest way out. before you apply shell ....you should analyze this.
1. Amount of thickness you are applying on model
2. If u find thickness may selfintersect model them use relax poly tool b4 applying thickness.
3. Seeing ref. image it seems u are applying excess thickness unnecessarily....as a matter of fact...as u go thicker & thicker one stage every model will undergo intersecting.
So just be careful
Relalxing reduces higher angular differences in closer polys which prevents self-intersection.
