tips? - ball of yarn

First time poster, long time follower.
I've been using 3ds for almost a year now, so I'm kinda still "a bit" of a newbie, but not to an extent where I don't know my way around the program.
I have this potential project coming up and I need some tips on a few areas to it. I have to model a ball of yarn with a strand sticking out up top. For the moment I'm still trying to gather some ideas on how to go about doing this. My direction on it right now is to take a torus knot, play with the settings and instance it a million times around a sphere. It works great and it looks like it's actually spooled around a sphere, downside to it is the high poly count. I was wondering if there's an indirect way of achieving this look without the high poly count?
