subsurface scattering with mentalray, and a mangled hair problem

I used poser fusion to import a model. The hair gets "mangled" and just looks like geometry with a texture applied to it, and the skin loses its realism. I need to know how to apply a NEW subsurface scattering to the skin, and still KEEP the old MAT that is allready apllied by ID. I also would like to fix the hair. could anyone help me?
