I have a material w/transparency mapped to a flat plane. Image renders correctly with transparency in the scene, until it interacts with a volumetric light. When I render atmosperic effects, the volume light illuminates the part of material that is to remain transparent creating a card type of effect. Anyone have this problem? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

This is common problem when used material for transparency. I have not used since long time..... but let me just have a look once again. It is not difficult to achieve the result although.

one trick is you use same map on specular channel to avoid reflecting light in unwanted areas..... note here you might need to make your colours toggle depending on your output results.

Select your light, and in the Modify panel under the general options roll out there is a button that says "include". Here you can select objects to include/exclude in your lighting.
