compare multi-res and Level of detail utility

I have a scene: a huge plane of office cubicles that my camera descends down on and zooms into a single cubicle.

I've built the main cubicle, and then 1 "duplicating" cubicle which I'm going to reference into about 300 array'd cubicles.

I want to use either the multi-res modifier or the level of detail utility to make this thing manageable for a mental ray render.

Option 1: Use multi-res to scale the "dup" cubicle to about 5% geometry, then reference array it. Then, based on the camera animation, tweak the multi-res on selective geometry as needed.

Option 2: Use the LOD util to scale everything.

Anyone have experience on which of these will be faster in rendering? Any other factors I need to consider? Any other ways I could be doing this?
