Video in 3DS Max

I'm working on a short with my friend who uses Max. I'm a lightwave guy, and we're supposed to be using the same footage for our 3D work, however when he loads the clip it slows the whole program to unusable, where I have no trouble. I forget what format the video is, but it doesn't seem to matter whether it's loaded as a texture, environment, or viewport background. In fact even browsing Is this a compression format problem, does max prefer image sequences in general, or should this not be an issue? Again this isn't really my program so I have no idea. ANyways, thanks for the help
I need to import a video (mov) created on Final Cut to 3d MAX, does it accept MOV. extension? If not what is the best extension to use?
I've tried AVI and MPG4 and the quality gets horrible
(even after rendering) comparing to the movie I exported from my final cut pro and watched at quicktime player.
