i am wanting to know what the best way to line up background images for modeling if i should use planes or background images
and if i should use background images then how do i make sure that they are lined up right so that the model will come out like it is supposed to thanks for any help that is out there

You have more control if you map the images to planes rather than setting them to be the viewport background.

ok so then what are some general guidelines for the size?

Depends on how much resolution you want in the viewport. I usually go with 1024X768 for the image. Then create planes with the same aspect ratio. Then map the images to the planes.
