3ds max 9 - 32 bit and 64 bit don't render together
on Jan 11, 2007 at 2:02:03 pm

Hi

We have two seats of 3ds max, which we upgraded recently to Windows 64 bit, and the new 3dx Max 9 64 bit. But we also have a small render farm of about 6 PC's, running windows XP 32 bit. We installed 3dsmax 9 32 bit on them to render.

But we firgured out that network render jobs submitted from max 9 64 bit will only render on systems with 3dsmax 9 64 bit; the systems with 3dsmax 9 32 bit installed won't accept the render jobs. The only way to get the 32 bit render farm to render is to open the SAME job on a 32 bit system and submit it TO THE SAME QUE MANAGER seperately from the 64 bit submission. Then the 32 bit systems will accept it and render it.

WHY???? This is lame. We' don't have funds to upgrade the render farm to 64 bit hardware, and 64 bit operating systems!

Is there any way to work around this issue?
Thanks
Francois Stark

have one of the 32bit machines start the render queue instead of the 64bit machine
a render farm of 32 bit mahines will get you more footage rendered faster than one 64bit machine

That's exactly what we don't want to do. When we're working on a complex project on the 64 bit Max, we don't want to have to re-open it on a 32 bit system just to submit it to a render farm. That's inefficient.

We would like to submit it straight from the 64 bit machine, but we can't, unless some bright spark has a solution that would not entail us re-opening it on another system.

Thanks

i just wanted to let you know that if you submit your max file via frantics "deadline" you can tell it to force a 32bit render. as far was i know the only network rendering management software to let you do that.

you should try it, i think it has a free licence for 2 seats.

we use it everyday with 3dsmax, cinema 4d, fusion, AE and maya. great piece of software!

hope this helps
