convert faces to patch

I have a mesh object that has a side that is made up of a whole bunch of long skinny faces. I want to bomb it, and when I do the lang and skinny faces look bad. Is there a way that I can convert all these faces to a patch whereby all the exploding pieces would then by small, not long and skinny?

I don't know if this will help you get the effect you want to achieve but take a peek at this month's 3dWorld magazine. There is a quick tutorial in there for creating realistic impact fragments for simulation.
