Saving .MAX to .3DS -- too many faces?

I'm trying to export a .MAX model to a .3DS model. But I get a message saying the object has too many faces to export correctly. I'm new to 3D Studio Max... is there any easy way to reduce the faces on my model without impacting its appearance too much in order to save it correctly in the .3DS format? Any help is appreciated thank you!
