3 point rope simulation - help

I have been asked to recreate an ipod ad in 3DS. I have a biped that dances. I have the ipod linked to the bipeds hand. I have earbuds in each ear of the character. Now comes the hard part - creating a natural looking cable running from the ipod up to the earbuds.
I have tried many approaches to this problem. I have tried using reactor rope which has been eratic and frustrating and also only works on a single continuous spline - the cable is in a "Y" shape forcing me to use two splines.
I have tried using the linkedXform to link the verts to the objects and even with soft selections. I have tried using flex as well and still things are wonky. I am really close to brute-force animating the cable by hand but I really want the natural motion that proceedural dynamics creates.

Any ideas anyone?
