material editor cleaning

when I save a 3dsmax file it saves the material editor with it. So it also saves and links to the maps that I don't use anymore but merely tried once. On opening these max-files it wants them again. I don't. Is there a way to save the maxfile without the maps that aren't used anymore?

if the map is being applyed through material editor, what you do is drag another material to map material. so the map wont need anymore. But if you have applyed the map material to an object, even if you have replaces with a new material it wont make a difference.so the max file needs the map.

5 years later... LOL

In the Material Editor, go to Utilities (on top), Condense Material Editor Slots, This will reset all slots that have not being assigned to any object to the Default.

Also in Utilities, Clean MultiMaterial. This will clean all unused sub-objects materials in the scene.

I replied just in case some one is google'n this 5 years later... ; )

i was into Maya till now, Max making me crazy these days. But yeah, I fancy Max too.
