I'm not quite sure what you mean...But here is my 2 cents...Render out a movie of the fire in AE, Combustion, Particle Illusion whatever you use. Render it out as a sequence, I use targas, you can use a number of formats, choose one that preferably supports alpha channels. Then in 3ds max when you select material select a bitmap. Select all of your sequence images and check sequence checkbox...Actually now that I think about it, you don't have to render it out as a sequence, 3ds max supports AVI and quiktime. The rest of the stuff that you are trying to accomplish you would have to do in composite apps, AE,combustion, shake etc.
BTW I would use footage fire, it looks much better then particle generator fire, even though particle illusion comes close.
