Demo Reel Rights/Releases Question
on Jan 12, 2006 at 11:34:20 am

Do you think I need (I know I should get them when possible) signed releases
for people and or band footage that I am going to shoot
if I only use this footage in my Demo Reel ?

It depends on the company

I've heard that some companies don't allow for content to be displayed on individual's reels.

There are some companies that are ok with it, but not until after the work has been screened already.

And then there are other companies that don't care one way or another

Re: Demo Reel Rights/Releases Question

I was trying to make a brief post without going into great
detail, but now I can see the confusion-

A private party (person) is having me shoot his 30th birthday
party where a band will be playing. Crowd shots, band shots
and mostly many interviews (300 people will be there).

My deal with the birthday boy is- I'm shooting this for next
to nothing in order to get exposure and material for a porfolio.

Only thinking in advance of the noise and confusion at most
parties with alcohol (& I'm shooting solo), I was concerned that
if I couldn't get or missed a signed release, that I'd maybe be
in trouble using that portion in my demo reel.

If something looks very good I might submit some edited part
of it to cable TV.
For instance, does it matter if the band has or has not been
signed to some label? Should the band leader, manager or ALL
members sign a release?

And when do I need "Music Sync License/Release", "Music Use License",
and I guess I need a "Location Release" signed by the owner, manager,
or their agent?

While I'm not sure if I'll use any footage, or what parts I
might use, until after I shoot, I'm just wanting to get a general
idea if demo reels are considered "re-broadcast", and what if I
post the reel, as most people do, on my website?

I assume that since I'm not selling the demo reel that
it wouldn't be classified as commercial.
BUT what if I get paid ANY money at all (is there a minimum or limit?)
for use on CABLE TV, then is it considered commercial?

ANY other thoughts/hints/guidelines/manuals/books/classes or on-line
information pointers or ANY suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.
This is my first attempt at a demo reel. Wish me luck!

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for forgiveness. Don't sweat it. It's a demo reel, not a movie. ;-)
