Possible to affect when a layer comes on with rigging?

Just curious if it's possible to use rigging to determine when a layer comes on or appears. So for instance:

I built a Motion project to allow a person (as a drop zone) to make certain bullet points.
The timing will not always be the same every time this person is recorded.
I created the highlight graphics which will be standard
I'd like the flexibility use rigging to determine when the highlights come on screen with the person speaking (and of course to give the editor(s) this control).

Each layer animates on by the way. It's not just an on/off state situation.

If this is not possible then I suppose the other method is to export each layer as it's own generator for FCP X where the editor can then place it on the timeline. Though I still wonder if what I am looking to do is possible.

What you're trying to do isn't possible as you describe. But you COULD set up a single template where you can choose which bullet point animates on per pop-up. Meaning that if you e.g. select "Bullet #3" then #1 and #2 are already on-screen and only #3 animates on, and so on. That way you at least only have ONE template for x amount of bullet-points.

You would of course still need a new instance of said template for each time a new bullet-point comes on, but at least not an entirely separate template for each bullet-point. If you know what I mean.

There is a bullet template I use from Deyson Ortiz from time to time. It has the same flaw. You can't control the timing.

However, my trick is to compound the generator, then using retiming (cmd+R), I just add holds (shift H) that can easily be adjusted for timing. Works great.

Yeah, I tried something similar as well. Thanks everyone.

[Bret Williams] "then using retiming (cmd+R), I just add holds (shift H) "

That's actually the best solution, yes. I should have thought of that. ;-D
