Drop Zones and FCP X

Just checking to see if I'm missing something. I'm working on a generator for X with a lot of drop zones. I'm publishing them all to X to choose the clips. The issue I have with X in this regard is that when you choose a clip for the drop zone by clicking on a frame of the clip, is that that frame you clicked on gets mapped to the START of the generator, and NOT the start point of the drop zone. It work ok if you're picking a section of the clip later in the clip because you can keep choosing a point earlier and earlier in the clip until you get the result you like. BUT, at some point the drop zone is so far down in the generator, that there isn't enough preroll to accommodate. At some point the generator might be so long, and the clip you want so short that you can't map anything to the drop zone but a freeze frame of the last frame of the clip. What is really needed is some way to slip/slide the clip inside the drop zone. But I can't seem to do that. Am I missing something or are drop zones really this inflexible?

Hello Bret, This was a bug that was introduced into Final Cut Pro X. I worked at one time perfectly and wherever you click is synced. I have sent Apple a bug report on this and I hope it gets resolved. In the meantime you could try this work around: http://support.motion-master-templates.com/article/13-syncing-video-inside-...

Please let me know if this works for you. Have a great day! :)

Unfortunately it's been this way about a year and a half. I don't think Apple cares. But your link and video are great. I'm working on some motion template ideas for videohive. If I include FCP X generator versions, I'd like to include a link to your article/video in my support docs if that's alright with you. I'm leaning away from doing any drop zones that aren't at the beginning of the template due to this bug. I don't needs an inbox full of complaints that they can't get the drop zones working.

BTW I've made good use of your bullet point plug/template a few times. Even found a way to adjust the timing by compounding it and adding hold frames between the different lines.

I would love to see some of your work on Video Hive.

Just so you are aware, I have not had that many complaints in regard to the drop zones. I guess when we want something done we will do the extra work involved to get it done. It is not the perfect solution, but I am sure Apple will have this fixed in soon. It may not be as easy as we think plus, they have a very small development team and a lot on their to do list.

Yes, you may share the link. I am happy to help. :)

I am glad you liked the bullet points template. :)
