Motion Path - workflow for even movement

I'm a absolute beginner with motion and a little desperate with my current project.
I need to move a car on a map, it's a very curvy way.
I stared with defining the path with keyframes, but the movement was very edgy.
I added the AVERAGE filter then (for x and y) which changed my path completely. I got those spiky edges, but at least the movement seems to be a bit more fluent. But this leads to problems when I try to change the keyframes (in the keyframe editor, in bezier mode).
Now I'm really unsure which one is the right and easiest way to do it, with filter or without or maybe a complete other way... hope you can help!
Another problem is, that when I'm working in the keyframe editor it constantly changes the view, the graphics flatten completely. I can changed it again by pressing the button with the graph, I know, but it changes again when I do my next move. Annoying....
