I'm trying to build a custom transition in Motion 5. What I need to happen is for a circular area to blur as the scene changes. It seems like there should be a way to apply a blur filter to a circle shape or mask so that it blurs the two placeholder layers below it, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any ideas?

Create a Clone of the entire group that encloses the two transition layers and make sure it's placed above the first group (it should be by default).

Then apply your blur filter and whatever mask you want to this clone layer and you'll get the result you are asking for.
