Hi all.
I have to recreate an interactive map just like the one in this link but have no idea where to start. :(
I am using Final cut studio 3 with FCP 7 and Motion 4 etc. on iMac OSX 10.6.8, 3.06Ghz 4GB Ram.

Well if you want the moving 3D globe like that motion isn't the right app. You'll need something like Maya, 3ds max, blender...

That kind of animation is actually very easy in Motion. You can create a line and that line can be animated with the Write On behavior, or just by keyframing the Start and End parameters at the bottom of the shape tab in the inspector. If you want there to be a little dot at the head of your animated line, that can be acheived by creating a circular shape and then animating it with the Motion path behavior so that it follows the line animation exactly.

Here's a tutorial showing how that might work.

As for the map move and all, that can be acheived with a 3D camera that follows the line over the map. The camera is moved using the Motion Path behavior as well.

Hope this helps,

Andy

That's a straight preset from iMovie. :) Also I believe Aperture or iPhoto can do that as well, don't quote me on it though.

You could try recreating it, but given your time constraints, render out the globe graphic from iMovie, and presto. Then you can do whatever you'd like with it.

The latest version comes with new Macs, otherwise you'd have to get it from the Mac App Store... you might have to go back to your install discs, but I'm not sure what version you'd have.

If you can't use iMovie, the next thing I'd do is try the FXFactory plugin, then do it yourself as a last resort. Also, look up the MacBreak Studio podcast, there's one where they do a 3D globe, you could probably base it off of that to some extent.

Hey, for a 3D earth, you could download Fx Factory http://www.noiseindustries.com/fxfactory/
Then, enable industrial revolutions freebie one pack (F1). You'll get for free, CoverFlux, World (the 3d world generator), opposites, and rack focus.

Try out the 3D world generator. You can change a bunch of it's features. You can even change cloud cover and things like that.

Another thing you could do is to get a map and apply the sphere distortion effect to it and animate the map.

If iMovie has it then that is the way to go. If you wanted the flexibility that iMovie doesn't offer then you do the line tutorial above and place it in a group with the map. Then add the Spear filter and move the glove around.

Slightly OT, but could you please identify the music that was used for the trailer - excellent piece of music and I really liked the editing of the video as well.

Thank you.

Hey, I've been looking to do a similar sort of thing but I want to be able to highlight individual countries. I found an after effects project that has exactly what I'd like and I was wondering if anyone knew of a similar element for motion?
