best settings: Motion/Compressor to Youtube

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can suggest settings for Motion and Compressor content that is intended for Youtube.

Been reading up on how to compress Final Cut footage for Youtube. None of the suggested settings seem to come out with Motion footage. Main issue is jagged edges around objects, almost like they were interlaced. Also some compression artifacts, especially in highlights.

here are my settings:

Name: YouTube HQ H264 HD 1080
Description: 1080*1920 full res, square pix
File Extension: .mov
Estimated file size: unknown
Audio Encoder
AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
Video Encoder
Format: QT
Width: 1920
Height: 1080
Pixel aspect ratio: Square
Crop: None
Padding: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Frame Controls On:
Retiming: (Best) High quality Motion Compensated
Resize Filter: Statistical Prediction
Deinterlace Filter: Best (Motion Compensated)
Adaptive Details: Off
Antialias: 0
Detail Level: 0
Field Output: Progressive
Codec Type: H.264
Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
Pixel depth: 24
Spatial quality: 100
Min. Spatial quality: 25
Key frame interval: 12
Temporal quality: 50
Min. temporal quality: 25
Fast Start: on

About to try this instead:

File Extension: .mov
Estimated file size: 4.29 GB/hour of source
Audio Encoder
AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
Video Encoder
Format: QT
Width: 1920
Height: 1080
Pixel aspect ratio: Square
Crop: None
Padding: None
Frame rate: (100% of source)
Frame Controls On:
Retiming: (Best) High quality Motion Compensated
Resize Filter: Statistical Prediction
Deinterlace Filter: Better (Motion Adaptive)
Adaptive Details: Off
Antialias: 0
Detail Level: 0
Field Output: Progressive
Codec Type: H.264
Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
Pixel depth: 24
Spatial quality: 75
Min. Spatial quality: 25
Key frame interval: 12
Temporal quality: 50
Min. temporal quality: 25
Average data rate: 10.24 (Mbps)
Maximum data rate: 10.24 (Mbps)
Fast Start: on

I know this is a silly question: have you tried the youtube preset under the File> share menu (or are you using Motion 3?)

Hi Jeff,

I'm still using Motion 3. You don't happen to have the settings handy in the inspector, do you? if so, is there any way you could copy and paste them for me, so I can check them out?

Any other advice would be welcome.

Thanks for the response,

-Joe

Basically, it's an 8mb h.264 in a QuickTime wrapper.

Well, what are your source settings? What are you starting with? I use a preset similar to your first setting (frame controls are typically unnecessary for a you tube upload). I do set the bit rate to between 3000 and 6000 kbs.

However, it matters a little what your Motion settings are as well. What is your frame size and frame rate?

Andy
