Ranting about Google
The room has been kind of quiet of late and I have a few minutes to kill and thought I'd rant. Well, very minor rant.
I'm usually a big fan of Google and almost all of their products, but they're annoying me now.
Like many of you, we use Gmail. Yes, we receive to and send from our own domain (@fantasticplastic.com), but it's really Gmail. We used to handle all email only internally on our own server here, but for simplicity and continuity sake it eventually made sense to just funnel it all through Gmail. Works like a charm.
Recently Gmail changed their log-in interface. I find it exactly the same as the previous version, just with a different look... EXCEPT... about half the time it doesn't work. A great deal of the time after entering my username, clicking the "next" button doesn't take me to the password page, but rather jumps me back to the previous page (exactly like hitting the "back" button). So I have to do it again...
But here's what I find a little bit funny....
Yes, Google actually says in subsequent paragraphs The steps to sign in haven't changed and that it Makes the sign-in process faster.
It can't be exactly the same... and different. Pick one. Hey Google, leave that double-speak to us marketing guys, will ya?
And in reality, in the previous previous version of the Gmail sign-in page two generations ago, both the user name and password dialog boxes were on the same page, not requiring a "next" click in between. So in actuality that sign-in page was simpler and quicker than this new "faster" one.
I'm sure Google has legitimate technical and aesthetic reasons for making this change (for one, I know it likely helps different devices look the same). I just find it a little amusing/annoying when a company does something for what I'm sure are legitimate in-house reasons yet chooses to veil it in the "making it better for you" argument to try to ward off customer blowback. It's a little bit "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."
Rant over, happy Wednesday everyone....

I am a regular Gmail user but I have not noticed it before! Thank you for pointing out it here, glad that I get to know about the mess!
