I'm struggling with the lack of shot variety in the wildlife stock footage world. Am not in the production/film industry and looking for advice on my options.

My ideal plan would be to find a documentary on the animal I'm covering then approach them directly to purchase the use of a few selected shots (90-180 seconds worth of total footage). It has occurred to me that this may not be an accepted or feasible approach. Any advice on this or secret insider information on how to get my hands on a good selection of footage would be great. Budget isn't huge but good footage is crucial so I need to work out all my options.

The final product is a small scale, short educational clips targeted at children so most likely a different audience than the film's I'd be approaching for footage. Most likely a youtube channel.

Big thanks for any info.
Leah =)
