Medical video/animation source?
on Jun 8, 2015 at 5:34:45 pm

Hey kids...

Maybe someone here can point me in the right direction. For a commercial campaign for a hospital I'm in need of some video or animation of a human heart... either beating or being imaged or something. It will go in a section of the commercial referring to CT angiograms and some new capabilities at the hospital (basically their new CT will do many more "slices" than the existing one)...

Something similar to this....

...but having trouble finding something appropriate that is at least 1080.

I know some of you have healthcare clients... any sources for something like this?

I know the obvious answers are "Ask the hospital for it" or "Can't the manufacturer give you video?" which does seem logical... but we've hit a wall with both of those avenues so I'm looking elsewhere.

Any ideas or resources are much appreciated.

Thanks!

My first thought is to look at the imaging machine the hospital has, it's probably either Philips, GE or Siemens. There will be a big logo on it, usually in the corner.

Next, contact the PR and/or marketing department of that company and I bet they will have some footage that is HIPAA cleared. They will have that footage from their previous video projects of hearts undergoing angiograms Tell them if they give you the footage you will be sure to show their logo on the machine. Quid pro quo.

Also, there will be an account exec from the CT machine provider in charge of that hospital's imaging department relationship and he or she will bend over backwards helping the hospital gain more biz thru your spot. Betcha.

If it works out you owe me a good bottle of wine.

Thanks Mark, yeah I thought of Mike, just hadn't gotten around to looking up his number yet. I haven't seen him here much in a while and he travels tons, but might can catch him.

Thanks Ned... but I owe you bupkus!!!

Per my previous post...

I know the obvious answers are "Ask the hospital for it" or "Can't the manufacturer give you video?" which does seem logical... but we've hit a wall with both of those avenues so I'm looking elsewhere.

We are having trouble getting what we need using the obvious avenues, as you mentioned...which were of course the first methods tried, as stated. That's why I'm looking elsewhere. We are not necessarily representing that the images we will be using are actual CT angio images from this machine, it just has to be in-the-neighborhood representational. Hard to explain without revealing the script (which I can't), but it doesn't have to be the "real thing."

OK, if I understand you correctly it can be impressionistic? If so go to:

FF to 1:18, there's your beating heart. If this works out you owe me a case of beer. Fat Tire will do.

Hmmm I don't think that it can be quite that representational, I think it needs to look at least quasi-realistic.

On a completely different matter, that's a template for Apple Motion and FCPX... I'm in the PC world here. Thanks though.

OK, here's my last advice. One of my many subspecialties is litigation support, so over the years I've been inundated with non-relevant emails from medical animation EXHIBIT companies. That's what they call themselves. So in your search for medical animation try putting the words "litigation support" in front of what you've been trying and you'll see there's a whole arcane field that makes anatomical animation just for high stakes lawsuits. They even sell templates that can be added to or your editor can pimp up.

If that works out you owe me a cold glass of milk.

Try Sean Maynard (lots of clips on Vimeo). He does this sort of thing all the time and he is great.

One might also download a pre-rigged model from Turbosquid and doll it up with some effects plug-ins and filters.

Many of those Turbosquid models come pre-animated as well; found one for just 25 bucks... YMMV
