soundcloud legal to use in my video?
on Jul 11, 2013 at 1:59:21 pm

i'm wondering if i can use tracks i've found in soundcloud under the creative commons for commercial use search? the stuff i want to use has a lot of sampling from hit songs on the radio so i'm not sure even how it can be creative commons but it says it is. i can't find any good tracks anymore on audiojungle and places like that so i'm looking for new sources. thanks for any help!

If the tracks are sampling hit songs I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole.

I think this is a case of someone saying something is cleared when it actually isn't.

Dunno if you are a Mac user, but try using GarageBand. There are hundreds of built-in clips of all different types. I use these to build layered audio for my stuff all the time - lay down a bass track, drums, a guitar, some funk, whatever and voila! Instant hit music! ;)

It was mentioned to try Acid, too - it's also a great app, but I haven't used it since I went Mac.

There are also a ton of free music sites out there, too. Just search Google for free music and you'll find a ton. Consider paying a small license fee for some music - many times, this can help eliminate the issues about what is royalty free, copyright free, creative commons, etc.

Look at stock agencies, too: Pond5 and iStockphoto sell great stock audio and they have a really large number to choose from.

Save early. Save often.

Hi Joel -

Take a look at the stuff Sony creates for its ACID music studio. There are collections of all types of music, and most of it is quite good. They also offer a weekly freebie. There are production cuts available:

As well as loop toolkits, many of which have free samples - beats, samples, guitar parts, and a lot more:

All of the sample libraries have clip samples which you can download for free, so if you've got some means of putting them together in a multitrack package (I use ACID Music Studio 9, which is quite inexpensive, and powerful). I also sometimes use Audition, which does the job as well, although not with the powerful looping and time adjustment tools of ACID.

Bear in mind that when it's free, there are often two possibilities - it's stolen, or it's garbage. With the Sony tracks, they're trying to get people to buy their library collection by giving free samples, so it's fine to use it, and the recording quality is very nice (always download the .wav files).

Hi Joel -

You have to do a bit of digging, but in addition to the free weekly 8 pack, there's also a bunch of free sample downloads with each sound library - you click the Samples button, and then a window opens up with 5 or 6 different samples in different formats that you can download.
