Hey fellow cows,

I am hired to put together a bunch of old commercials for a client that is only going to run in their restaurants.

However, they want to use the opening sequence to a national tv show that aired in the late 60's.

Does anyone know if I could just take it from Youtube and throw it in the edit (since it's only airing in their facilities) or do I need to go through the channels of buying the rights to the show and intro music?

I know there is or was a public domain law but for this time period it would be 95 yrs. after first published. But is there some kind of law that allows for free use for a couple seconds?

As I write this I am feeling that I'm am probably going to have to go through the channels of buying it.

TIA

Sam

You would be showing this in public in a restaurant so the same rules of copyright in a public place apply. Just like they have to purchase the "business licenses" of something like DirecTV to show sports and tv in a restaurant.

If the show is not in public domain you will have to find the license holder and get appropriate permission.

You're going to have to get permission for the clip to be legal, but it may not cost a lot. Start with a trip to B-Z pemissions.

Yep - Barb Zimmerman in NYC is a good place to start!

Production is fun - but lets not forget: Nobody ever died on the video table!
