Selling our Television series online - Suggestions?
on Mar 30, 2013 at 12:06:42 pm

I produce a television show called Distant Shores. We have sold to television stations and are now looking at ways to expand and sell online.

Anyone done this before?

We have 112 episodes X 30 minutes (produced over the past 12 years)

I have looked into iTunes store and apparently need to go through an aggregator to encode the files. Prices seem steep. Anyone used Google Play or Amazon or anything else?

I'm considering going the Vimeo On Demand way for some new web only series we're creating.

Hi Walter!

Quickly looking at their website I see they take 10% after transaction fees... have you looked into this any further to see how you would sell a series?

[Paul Shard] "Quickly looking at their website I see they take 10% after transaction fees... have you looked into this any further to see how you would sell a series?"

That's all it is. You keep 90% they keep 10%.

You put your videos up on Vimeo.

You set the price.

If people buy the videos, you make 90%.

That's all there is in terms of Vimeo On Demand. There is no "selling of the series." It's just an open marketplace. If people find and buy your videos, you make money.

That's really the trick, if you're doing this. Gotta find/build an audience. Walter (and everyone else): I'd love to learn about what you are doing to address this with your marketing/social media/etc. Now, if you're lucky enough to have a built-in audience, that's cool (like, if your show was on TV for years, or if you have name talent, or a very specific niche that you're plugged into). But a lot of us don't have that.
