AVA Awards

Apologies in advance to all if I'm asking this question in the wrong forum. Does anyone know about or had experience with the AVA Awards? It's sponsored by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP). I'm curious to know how significant it would be if someone came first or placed well in one or more of the several awards categories. I for one have never heard of these awards before so I'm just curious. I'm sure it wouldn't be the same as winning a WEVA award, for example, but I don't know.

AVA stands for "Audio Visual Arts" I think.

No one has chimed in, so I will.

Have to say, Don, I've never heard of those awards either. So they don't mean that much to me.

If you are doing advertising and/or television... to me the only awards that even slightly matter are ADDYs, Clios, and Emmys. And I still don't put much stock in them.

We always enter our area's ADDYs... but not to get the plastic statues. We do it because our biggest client (whom we love) is always heavily involved with the AdFed (and sometimes in charge of the awards, depending on the year). They would probably feel slighted if we didn't enter, although I threaten to do that every year. Also, I like going to the awards dinner... again not to get the trophies, but to schmooze with our clients and other agencies, and to have our work seen on the big screen.

My favorite awards story happened when we moved into another studio several years ago. When moving in, a whole bunch of awards were left -- in a giant pile -- in our new lobby... literally like you poured them out of a barrel into a heap. Unfortunately they stayed there for a couple a months. One visitor once said "Hey I really like that." When asked why they said "It shows you win tons of awards, but couldn't care less about them." Ha.

I'd save my money on the entry fees on this one.

Thanks Todd for your response. My answers are somewhat akin to your own: I always answer to the best of my ability but also try to relate an experience that gives more meaning to a fact or opinion I've expressed.

Too late. My wife was responsible for this and entered our company in 2 categories. We were awarded a 1st in one and 2nd in the other. Since we've never entered anything before I guess it's kinda cool. Even though it'll probably turn out that our peers won't have heard of these awards, that won't matter to our clients. Now we can state on our landing page that we won something, but will only impress lay peoples' visits to the web site. This was my wife's goal to begin with.

It's always nice to meet one's goals :)

Cheers, Todd

Well then, let me be one of the firsts to say, "Congratulations, Don!"

Sometimes seeing one's wife reach one of her goals (and hopefully the domestic bliss that follows) is a good enough goal to have in and of itself.
