Hello

We have a server problem. We're a small company using, amongst other things, FCP and Aperture (which doesn't like networks anyway). We've got an HP server which runs linux but we have permissions problems all the time. This makes our day-to-day existence frustrating and inefficient.

What is the best server solution for apple imacs, using the programs we've got? How do other small businesses do it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Anthony

Well it depends on what you want to do with the server, you never told us so we cant really say. Some things that people do with a server are basic and do not require much while other things require a much more beefy machine.

Those programs have no problems at all with networks. The only problems I have seen is when people are trying to use one licence on more then ome machine at a time, which should not be a problem at all because legally you should have one licence per machine.

But Again let us know what you want to do with a server and perhaps someone might be able to help you.

Hi Zane, our server is used mainly as storage. We have our capture scratch (FCP) and all referenced files (Aperture) on it. Along with our shared files for everything else. It's 3TB with the option of more storage. And it's also got a good archive system so that we can store data off-site.

It's a windows machine (HP) because we were advised it would be better for connecting to the internet. In the future we want to create a stock library for our clients.

We've always had problems with the server, initially we thought it was a compatibility issue between windows/mac. We were using samba share but now moved to AFP. But still we have issues.

We're at the stage of losing this server and starting again. We're just not sure what to replace it with. Or whether we'll have problems with the new server anyway?

Thanks for your help

Anthony

Not sure why you were told a Windows machine is better for internet connectivity. Have never heard that one was better than the other. Our SAN is on the internet all the time and even used remotely from time to time.

We run the Final Share SAN here in our shop which I've reviewed here for the Cow and even updated my thoughts on the system in my blog this morning. It's an ethernet based SAN that allows you to not only share files, but edit HD video via ethernet.

From what I've learned about the system, it works for about 90% of our work. That last 10%, very VERY large documentary projects, seems to be pushing the limits of playback....

Now if you don't need a SAN for video playback but just a network for sharing files, definitely get a hold of the guys at Small Tree Electronics. They know networking forward and backwards and are really the brains that make our SAN work.

I know the answer to your question ! The best server for your company is the one that your support people, and IT contractors know how to incorporate into your facility, and keep it working.

You are asking on the wrong forum - if you have SAN questions, go to the SAN forum on Creative Cow.
