Hi all,

My partner and I produce a show which appears on several New England PBS stations. We were approached recently by an international syndicator who would like to air our show in several European countries. We have no experience with syndication, much less international. We are told there will be no costs for us and we will be paid a percentage of the ads that appear in our show. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[Mark Ciesinski] "We are told there will be no costs for us and we will be paid a percentage of the ads that appear in our show."

What about actually being paid for the use of the show, itself? This "offer" has many loopholes for you to be paid a whopping total of $0 for your show to bounce around the entire world for many years to come.

The syndicator will sell the use of the show, but may not collect any add revenue, himself. So he will owe you nothing. Or the show may be shown without commercial breaks, again owing you nothing. Or they may simply lie to you about ad revenue, pretending to owe you nothing. Etc...

I have three friends with movies in distribution and there has been a grand total of about $4,000 paid to them over the past three years.

An honest distributor will make you a cash offer, not an offer based on how much ad space they "might" sell.

They will say there was no net revenue and you will be paid nothing.

Strike a better deal. Get an entertainment lawyer on the phone for a quick consultation.

Congrats, though, on the show getting interest. Good for you, really!!!

I agree with Rick. If someone wants to steal your stuff, it probably has value.
