DANG! Won the bid... now need insurance!

Okay... this one is one of those two-edged swords...

I placed a bid on an annual contract RFQ (classroom training videos) which requires insurance coverage by the winning vendor. Normally, I would seek an annual policy, but the RFQ states that line items could be selected independently... they could do just one video or ten videos. Therefore, the cost of coverage would need to be either "by-the-project" or low-cost enough to absorb into one or two projects.

My questions for the masses:

Any general recommendations on this issue?
Anyone got a really good insurer they could recommend?
What is typical for premiums given the following?...

- One man, one camera on a tripod, a couple of lights, etc.
- Need general liability ($1M injury/accident/person;
$500K/property loss) & workers comp

Anyone?

buy general purpose media insurance. Here in Canada I can cover my company for millions for only $700/year. Look for companies that specialize in media insurance and have them consult you.

WOuld you mind sending me the name of your insurance company? Does your policy cover your equipment also? I'm looking to change.

Thanks.

multimediarisk.com will get you in contact with the folks here in Winnipeg. Claude is the guy who you want to have discussion with.

Good luck and if it works out, send some work my way, lol,
Mick

Thanks John,

Considering it's nice out and that you don't have any business out here, this type of situation works out very well for me!

If you are a one-man operation with no employees I don't see why you should need workman's comp - try pushing back on that.

General business liability seems to be what they're asking for otherwise. I've heard of productioninsurance.com, more of a specialist and probably their equipment loss/damage riders are more affordable or accessable than what a conventional insurer offers.

I'm very interested to see where you end up with this, as I too don't carry any specialized insurance, but one of these clients will require it...

The workers comp push-back is a good point. I'll have to investigate this, though, to see if it's worth stirring things up with the client. If it's only worth $50, I probably wouldn't want to risk a $50k contract!

I'll give productioninsurance.com a check-out. Thanks for the tip!
