Why is the 48 Khz song playing so slow?
on Apr 19, 2005 at 11:01:23 pm

Hi,
As you will discover by my question, I have less than a basic understanding of advanced audio.

I created a CD from songs that are 44100 hz, 1411 Kbps, with the exception of one song which is 48000 Hz, 1536 Kbps. All songs play perfectly on my computer. When I play the created CD on my living room surround system, the 48000 Hz plays about a quarter to slow.

Do all songs recorded to CD have to meet the same requirements?
If all the songs had been 48000 Hz would they have played normally?

Please educate me in this area and advise me as to how to properly record these.

Thanks in advance,
William

William,

The 48K is just the sample rate and has nothing to do with the speed of the recording ... I think you need to look elsewhere ...

Here's what's happening:

1). When I click on the CD drive name, Real Player cranks up and automatically plays the song in mention at 1411 kbps (slow).

2). Yet, if I "do not" do the above, but start up Real Player first and select the song, it plays it at 1536 Kbps (normal).

I initially captured this song into Premiere Pro 1.5 set at 48000 Hz. I have never done that before. I did this hoping for better quality. I do quite a bit of DVD authoring and have never had anything to play at a reduced speed before.

I will check with the Real Player people. They will probably know the answer.

Thanks anyway.

William,

I have mixed 32k, 41,4k, and 48K and have never had this problem before ... You are right to go to 48K and I would suggest that you stick with it ... Sorry that there isn't a clear answer for you ... Please let us know what you find out ....... WILLIE

The Redbook audio specification (that's tech talk for making a legal CD) requires all audio to be 16bit 44.1kHz. So your 48kHz audio is being played back as if it were 44.1, resulting in it sounding slow. Just use Audition to resample to 44.1 kHz before writing to CD and all will be well.

Have fun!

Thanks for your reply.
I did resample it and it was just fine as you said.
