Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble getting my video to play in Firefox and chrome on the following webpage..

http://cascadepictures.co.uk/reel.html

The space where the video is just loads as a white block. I read somewhere that it has something to do with the code for the swfplayer? But not sure what I need to do to fix it.

I'm using Dreamweaver CS5

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

hello...

have you verified that your code is cross-browser compatible? if not, google "flash cross browser" (sans quotes) and you should find lots of good examples...

if you have then let us know and we can go to the next step!

Hi

Thanks for the response.

I have seen that flash object tag for compatibility with other browsers but am not completely sure where to place it or what to replace from the current code I have?

My code is the standard one I got from inserting the swf player into my page. I can't seem to paste in this message the whole code unfortunately but it should be ok to view of the weblink..

I'm guessing I need to change something after the section stating:
"<!-- Next object tag is for non-IE browsers. So hide it from IE using IECC. -->" ?

But so far no luck. The rest of my code and page are working fine though...

hello...

ok - since you are working entirely within dreamweaver, i'll push this thread to that forum...in your code there you have the object tag, but understandably if you aren't sure what to change outside of dw, then it's best to get the advice over there on how to fix it within the app...

best of luck!

Hi again Curtis

I've put this thread on dreamweaver but while I'm waiting to get some feedback I thought would check something by you if you have a moment?

I looked up "flash cross browser" and found an "object" code that people were using in place of dreamweavers swf player code..

I replaced the entire swf player code with that object code changing just the details that I needed to to get the swf to point to my swf file. However the result is exactly the same.

The code I'm talking about is from this site:
http://www.coffeecup.com/forums/website-design-and-development/flash-object...

I would have thought there would be more on this on google though but that seemed to be the only page that was clear on it and its quite an old one? Any other suggestions in case no one gets back to me on the other forum?

thanks again

hello...

looks like the page in question still has the old code, but i assume you just did a test page? your best bet is to make a simple page completely outside your design and download some sample code like you found and even try it with a sample flash movie that isn't yours. once you get that working, swap in your video...once that is all working, you can plug that simple example back into your page.

that way you eliminate any other outside variable in the page as a culprit and can just focus on a simple page with a flash embed as the only content...

Hi again

I have been trying to use the code on a test page most of the day but no luck. I think I'm going to have to go and use youtube as a video source and iframe the video into the page instead.

From looking around the net it seems that there are a number of people and sites that know how to fix it but I can't make heads or tails out of their description of what to do, so although its easily fixed according to those who know how, is proving a dead end for me and a massive time consumer :(

Fortunately youtube is a decent (although ugly) alternative!

Thanks again

Thanks for having a look...

I have uploaded these 2 versions:

http://www.cascadepictures.co.uk/reeltest
http://www.cascadepictures.co.uk/reeltest2

On the first one I just replaced the entire swf object code with the code that others have been using from around the google searches just adjusting the size and name of the swf its pointing to etc.

But I get a broken flash symbol on dreamweaver and no video plays..

On the second one I did the same but I added an object ID and connected directly to the swf file using the pick whip which then made the video play off the local drive without a broken flash symbol but when uploaded does not play on any browser.

The code in question starts at line 301

hello...

ooh - i mean a real simple test page - so like in html blocks, you have

[html]
[body]
[flash]
[/body]
[/html]

like this:

http://sitruc.com/cow/flash/

that has 2 types of embeds that should be pretty cross-browser friendly - one uses a js script and one doesn't...but take that code and change it out to use your movie and see if it plays...if not, then it might be the movie file itself?

Oh ok will do that. Thanks. Will post it later today.

Out of curiosity what in the swf file itself could cause a problem? I don't know that much about the workings of flash based video so if its possible then is good to know what could cause issues.

Wool get on to the test page and see what happens..

Ok I made the test page:

http://www.cascadepictures.co.uk/test2

Still the same outcome for me. The swf plays fine off the local drive but not off the site. The white box appears. the controls are there when you hover over where the video should be and when you press play the buffer bar starts to fill but then gets green stripes along it indicating something is not right.

So all in all the test page has the same issues as my previous one. The swf is uploaded to the ftp so it can't be that its pointing to a video that is not there..

hello...

olk - first step is to take that sample movie i used (or any known working flash movie) and use that instead of your demo reel one - if that works, then you know that it's your movie...

as for why it wouldn't work - i can't say as i don't have access to your flash file, but i'd guess that perhaps you do have a path issue somehow and that you are referencing something that it can find locally but not on the server once it is copied there...

ok I did that with a flash movie that is used on my websites home page. That works on both safari and IE.. so that's all good. Butthat swf file is located in the same folder as the demoreel swf file that is not playing.. so its very odd that basically in terms of the path the video is in the same folder and both work on IE but one works on safari and the other doesn't? I thought flash was invented to not have such issues cross browser?

So I guess the next step should be to go to the flash section and see what the folks over there might be able to add about why the video would be the issue? That's at least a step in the right direction. Thanks again..

hello..

ya - w/o being able to see your flash source, it's pretty hard for me to offer much at this stage, unfortunately... :-/

but do just go through that movie file source and double-check everything...

Thanks

Yeah the code is spot on as I just switched the video straight into the link and tried it and same outcome so its definitely the video! So ultimately The code unchanged works with the working flash video on my site but not with the video that is in question.. :(

Off to the flash forums so see how that goes.. wish me luck ;)

Christy VaccaRe:Fix for SWF video will not play in FIREFOX or SAFARI but fine in IE and CHROME

I found the fix do the uninstall and reinstall of adobe flash player
http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html#...
then reinstall.
also place your fla and swf and any other files to do with your flash movie for your website in the same place that the HTML pages are located. ;-)
