Make text description appear
on Aug 19, 2009 at 2:24:23 am

I've designed a few websites but am not an experienced web designer. I've done some javascript & DHTML stuff but most of it has been created from tutorials where you can copy/paste the code...and/or through experimentation.

I've created a video player page for our video portfolio that will use javascript to call videos into a Flash Player (JWPlayer). What I'd like to do is have a text description appear above the player when the video is loaded into the player.

Here's a very rough layout.

http://www.videomi.com/Flash_load_example.htm

The links are programmed into the image thumbnails below the player, (they work) and I'd like for the text description to appear on the white/gray banner above and to the right of the video (white text). The left column menus don't work and they'll eventually use DHTML so what's there is just a visual placeholder.

Is it possible to do the text description action using javascript??

Thanks for any help here. If someone could point me in the right direction I can figure the coding out. I've just come up empty doing searches for this...likely because I don't know what to call it.

Thanks

I thought I'd respond to my own post on this! You can indeed do this using javascript and the freely available swfobject.js from google.

You can find out how by going to the javascript forum at Lontailvideo.com, which is the home of the JWPlayer.

You can use the "show/hide element" behavior in Dreamweaver.

For that you can place many AP divs, one in front of the other, with your description text inside. Name each div and hide them with CSS.

visibility: hidden;

Then, select your preview, add the behavior and select which AP divs you want to show and hide. Also, look in the behaviors tab and change the trigger to "onMouseDown".

I hope this helps

Unfortunately we don't use Dreamweaver and the javascript method works nicely. But good info for those that do.

Fernando,

Thought I'd update this thread. We ended up using a variation on your method rather than using the javascript code from JW Player.

We use Microsoft Expression and you can bascially do the same thing you mentioned in it as Dreamweaver. Works perfectly and a lot easier to code than trying to get JW Player to read the description from XML.

If we had 300 videos using XML would be better, but we don't, so using this method works great. Thanks for the tip.
