What program language & applications should I learn
on Jul 10, 2009 at 3:53:46 am

Hey Guys & Girls,

So I am looking to get back into web design. My background includes ActionScripts & HTML. I'm looking to get into database and web applications. In your opinion what programing languages and applications should I learn? My goal it may be a little steep. I would like to transition back into the web design in 6mths

Thanks
Brian

You can learn PHP and MySQL.

PHP is not the easiest, but is easy enough, free, popular and stable.

hello...

i'd save yourself the $50 and learn online - there are thousands upon thousands of php/mysql tutorials (use google to find them)...

otherwise o'reilly has a few good books. but again - what you want to learn is one of the most common web toolsets out there, so you can find plenty of info for free...

Can you recommend any good sites. Since I learn better by reading. Are the Orielly books good for beginners?

hello...

[Brian Bradley] "Can you recommend any good sites. Since I learn better by reading. Are the Orielly books good for beginners? "

not really because i don't know how you learn. but seriously - type php and mysql into google and you'll get back a million hits that teach you everything you want to know. you might respond better to some tutorials than others, but that's hard for me to say.

as for the books - again, "beginner" is a loaded term. you referenced experience w/ action scripts. those can be insanely complex or very simple, so i can't gauge your programming skills from what you've said here.

best recommendation - how to install both:

http://www.google.com/search?q=php+mysql+install

then start here:

http://www.google.com/search?q=php+mysql+tutorial

and if you aren't finding yourself learning much, then take a look at the free preview of the o'reilly php/mysql book:

http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596514013/preview.html

and see if that works for you...
