Adding Control Panel for Embedded Flash Movies
on Apr 15, 2007 at 1:11:41 am

When I embed a .mwv or .mov file in a webpage, it adds a little control panel at the bottom of the video window with controls such as play, pause, volume, etc. But when I embed a .swf file, no control panel shows up. How can I add a control panel to the Flash movie?

hello...

short answer is that you have to write one - those controls are added automatically by the qt or wmv movie player, so in flash you'll need to write your own in actionscript...

Curtis,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Is there any reasonably easy way to write the script without actually buying and learning Adobe Flash? I use Sorenson Squeeze 4.3 to compress my videos. They do offer a few control panel frames for Flash output, but the autoplay function is disabled. Looks like you can edit the look of the frames with Adobe Flash, but I'm not sure if you can enable the autoplay.

Autoplay isn't disabled on my copy of Squeeze. Are you linking to flvs from the swf control panel, or are you embedding. I do the embedding and it works.

Thanks for the sample, Bret. That's the same template that I used! I use the embedded swf option, but when I go to select a template, I get a message that says "Squeeze does not support Movie Start Actions and Loop Actions with Templates and Embedded video. Please use 'linked FLV Video' files if you wish to use these actions."

Could it be that I have an older version of Squeeze? I have Squeeze Compression Suite ver 4.3.303.17 for PC.

You apparently have a smart action chosen, like loop or something. Lose the smart actions.

Squeeze 4.3 comes with FLV player templates.

So compress the video to FLV. Then output also an SWF file and click on the 'player settings'; There you'll have to check "linked to FLV" or something like that.

You can there also choose the type (design) of FLV player you want.

When you're done you'll end up with TWO files; The source video file (FLV) and then the player file (SWF). It's the SWF that you embedd into your web page, that in turns then call the FLV video when you play it.
So they have to both be uploaded to the server.
