Richard17HTML Code - multiple video files to play in one area
by on Aug 20, 2006 at 1:46:34 pm

I have a series of progressive download video files that I want to
play on a single web page in a single space. In other words the viewer
will choose v1(embeddeed video file 1), v2, v2, vx . . . etc. and each
will display in a single "viewing area" on the same page.

Can someone tell me the way and the code to accopmplish this?

Thanks

hello...

can you expand on "progressive download"? do you mean that you want v1 to trigger v2 right as it's done loading? or do you just mean you want a few links to videos and when the user clicks on them they play vX in the "video playing space" on the page?

Curtis:

The latter . . .not a sequence of videos but one at a time (as the user chooses)
in the same space.

Thanks

hello...

ok - thanks for the clarification! a common way to do this would be with dhtml and hiding/showing content based on clicks - here's a demo of that which i did for another question a while back:

http://www.sitruc.com/cow/change_panel/

the problem with that is that all the content is loaded on the page and you're just showing and hiding bits of content - so in your case, that would mean X movies would be loading on the page at once, which can be slow. you really only want to load movies as requested. so in that case, you might want to consider an iframe - basically just a floating frame on your page that holds content from another page. so in this case, you would have an iframe that was the width/height of your movies and you'd put it on the page where you wanted the movies to show. then with each click of a thumbnail, you'd change the href of that iframe to a separate file that played that movie. here's an example of an iframe that i had on file:

http://www.sitruc.com/cow/iframe/change_two.html

(it's more complex and was for another question on how to change 2 iframes at once, but you can see the idea here)

make sense?

Curtis:

I get the idea . . . in theory. Now I'll try to execute it.
Seems like an iframe is the key so I'll learn a little bit more about
that.

Many thanks!

BTW - I haven't used JavaScript before but I assume it itergates into
a basic HTML page as shown in your source code for:

hello...

yup - no special page type is needed for javascript - plain html will be fine...

You can also simply fill the page with single frame .movs that when clicked launch a movie it's place. Don't really understand how it works, just copied the code from apple years ago. The only issue is that if they decide to click another clip they would then be downloading 2 at the same time. Even if they paused the first. But that would be the same issue with an iframe.

Code example...

I only have 1 move on that page, but there's no reason you couldn't have as many as you like.

hello...

[Bret Williams] "But that would be the same issue with an iframe."

ooh - no. not what i meant - you could switch the url of the iframe on each click to a new page, so the respective movie would only load if you clicked on the link for it - so if you had 5 separate movies, then you'd either have 5 separate html pages or one scripted page that took a param like a file name and returned that movie...

Curtis:

I have your suggested (iframe with separate HTML page for each video) approach up and working. Thanks.

Now I'm curious about the second idea:

"or one scripted page that took a param like a file name and returned that movie..."

Do you have an example of this?

hello...

no example but with any basic scripting language (php, asp, jsp, cgi, etc.) you can render one page with all common elements and then take a parameter to tell which movie to load...

so in php it would be sorta like:

<OBJECT ... SRC="/path_to_movie_dir/<?= $_GET["movie"] ?>" ...></OBJECT>

basically the get param get passed in via something like this:

<IFRAME SRC="/path_to_movie_page/show_movie.php?movie=1.wmv" ...></IFRAME>

and then you catch it in the file...the rest is the same across all movies so you end up with one page that can show all your movies...

make sense?

Yeah, I misinterpreted it as multiple movies in the same space meaning the same page. Like they could all be playing on the same page at the same time potentially, but with the ability to load separately. Why anyone would want that I don't know, but once they're all loaded it would be convenient if you were comparing things.

The iFrame thing sounds like the way to go. Simple clean and basic.

Again . . .thanks for all your help Curtis.

I may try the scripting approach but then again

your original suggestion is working well.

Cheers!
